There is a saying amongst locals in San Miguel that goes: "At night, everybody is friends with everybody in San Miguel". Nothing could be more true, San Miguel has one of the region's most active nightlife scenes, as well as one of the best atmospheres.

Tourists from all over Mexico, America and Europe, come to San Miguel and can immediately notice the wide array of bars and clubs available to have a memorable night. The mentality among people that come to enjoy the nightlife is "anything goes," as strangers mingle with each other, locals meet tourists, and strangers become friends with people from across the world.

Bar-hopping is a recommendable approach to the San Miguel nightlife, due to the high volume of popular spots that light up the night.

There is a little bit of everything, in terms of bars and clubs, intended to fit the taste, energy level and budget of any visitor. From upscale bars and clubs full of beautifully dressed patrons, to low-key bars featuring live music, to traditional Mexican cantinas that offer drinks at extremely affordable prices. There are the traditional bars that have been in San Miguel forever and still seem to be everybody's favorite, and then there are the new up-and-coming bars that offer something unique with hopes of stealing some market share away from the San Miguel staples. There is also a certain seasonality and day of the week when one bar seems to be more popular than the other, so try to keep an eye out and spot the bars with the best atmosphere.

As mentioned previously, bar-hopping is very common and very easy to do, as most bars are within close walking distance of each other. A tip for ladies: don't wear high heels, as the roads are made of a texturized, slippery rock that makes it very hard to walk on with heels. Also, when in doubt, just ask the locals where the party is at, they are sure to direct you to the right place. And if all else fails, just head to Mama Mia, where there is always something fun to do there, even if it requires trying one of their most feared drinks, the Brujeria.

Whatever the reason for your visit to San Miguel might be, paying a visit to some of the bars is a must, as they are an intricate part of San Miguel's society and culture.
