What do you want to eat? Grab a quick fish taco? A BBQ burger? How about something elegant, like a lavish Louisiana style meal? A great steak? Local specialties like a Chile rellano or two? Chinese? Lebanese? Sushi? You’ll find them all—and more—in San Miguel! And, if you want to save some money, buy the San Miguel VIP Club Card. It’ll save you 20 percent on your bill when you pay cash, or 15 percent if you use a credit card. You’ll probably find one for sale for about $40 at La Conexion, on Aldama (it’s where a lot of gringos get their mail, so ask anyone how to get there). As you walk around town, look for small restaurants tucked in between other buildings. If there’s a sign for comida specials, it’s probably a full lunch for about $4. Just ask what they’re serving. Have your drinks at home and you’ll save a lot of money. Most restaurants will take your credit cards, although some will balk at American Express. And, leave a tip! Some visitors say 10 percent is adequate, but most visitors will leave 15 percent. Sometimes, 20 percent, if service was particularly good or special requests were made. Like most cities in Mexico, restaurants come and go. And they just might be closed when you think they’ll be open. If one disappears or closes, it’s just a short walk to another restaurant, almost anywhere you are in San Miguel de Allende. Don’t even think about driving into el centro. You’ll never find a parking place. Walk. Or, take a taxi. They only cost about $2 (US) wherever you choose to go. Late in the evening they’ll want a little more. And, yes, you can drink the water, have ice in your drinks and enjoy a salad in the restaurants in San Miguel de Allende. Beware if you’re dining at a street stand.
